Ian Farrimond and Harry Walklet win Staffordshire Parks Doubles

The final stages of the Staffs Parks Doubles were held at London Road Bowling Club on Tuesday 22nd September.
In the semi-final, our Westlands duo, Ian Farrimond and Harry Walklet beat Adrian Lally and John Podmore 21 - 15 (Pittshill Vics).
In the Final, Ian and Harry won 21 - 9 against Peter and Dominic Okonski (Wolstanton HSC).
This success kept the Parks Doubles Title at Westlands as in 2014 it had been won by Steve Howe and Peter Letts.
Congratulations to Ian and Harry, you have done us proud.

Congleton Division 1 2015 Championship

Our Congleton team had a superb season by winning the Division 1 Title.
This is without doubt our toughest League.
Under the captaincy of Steve Howe they lost only 2 of their 20 matches. The players averaged 19.59 points per game, a record for this Division.
We were promoted into the 1st Division in 2011 and have gradually improved by finishing 9th, 7th, 5th and 4th.
Congratulations to Steve and the team on this great achievement.

4th Consecutive Title for Saturday Parks Division 1 Team

Captained by John Jenkins, our Saturday Parks Team won the Division 1 Title for the 4th consecutive season. This is the 7th time they have topped the League since 2000.
They equalled their 2014 achievement of losing just 2 matches during the season. Their sequence of home wins has now stretched to 37 matches, the last home defeat being on 5/5/2012.
Well done John and the team.

Oakhill Jubilee League 2015 Division 1 Title

Our Oakhill 1st team, captained by Graham Atherton won the Oakhill Jubilee Division 1 Championship.
We have had a team in Division 1 since 2008 and in recent years have often come close to topping this league. We were runners-up in 2014 and 2013 and in the previous 2 years finished in 3rd spot.
The law of averages indicates that we can safely expect another 1st in 2016!!
Well done Graham and the team.

Division 2 Newcastle League 2015 Championship

Our Newcastle 1st team, captained by Dave Jackson topped Newcastle League Division 2.
Our Newcastle 1st team had been in Division 2 since 2012 and it will be great to see them back in Division 1.
It was a particularly good year for Ben Jackson who had been out of the game for a few years. Ben won 17 of his 20 games and finished top of the Division 2 Averages. He just pipped colleague Peter Letts in the averages which were dominated by the Westlands team who had 5 players in the top 8.
Congratulations to Dave, Ben and the team.

Harry Walklet wins 2015 President's Cup

Thirty-two members, twice as many as in 2014, entered this year's knockout competition; unfortunately there was one withdrawal. A separate draw for opponents was made prior to each round.

The first of 5 rounds was back in May and a fair amount of giant killing kept the competition interesting over the next 4 months.

The final, between Harry Walklet and Paul Curley, took place on 7th September. On his path to the final Harry beat John Shuker, Harry Hulme and Jim Miles while Paul accounted for Sylvia Oates, Mo Clarke, John Mawby and Ben Jackson.

There was plenty of support for the finalists which was a game of some quality. Paul built up an early lead but Harry gradually got on top and ran out the winner 21-14.

Congratulations to Harry on winning the President's Cup for the first time and to Paul for reaching the final.

Thanks to all participants who played every game by the prescribed deadline. This ensured that the competition progressed smoothly throughout the summer months.

Harry and Paul

Thanks to Bernard Oates our competitions have been revitalised in recent years. The Club are very grateful to Bernard for his tremendous work in the role of Competitions Secretary.

2015 Westlands Cup - Sunday 16th August

This handicap competition is open to all members of Westlands Bowling Club and Westlands Ladies Bowling Club. The overcast but dry mild weather provided excellent bowling conditions for the 23 participants. The line-up included Dave Kidd who was looking for his 3rd successive win of this trophy.
Everyone made their usual excellent contribution to the food and midway through proceedings members and their guests enjoyed an excellent buffet.
The preliminary stage involved everyone playing 3 games of 10 ends. After these games the four highest scoring players were Ian Farrimond, Ian Carter, Steve Howe and Bill Oldham.
A roll-off was held before the semi-finals and the winner, Norman Thompson, received a small monetary prize.
After this short interlude the semi-finals saw Bill Oldham lose by just 1 chalk to Steve Howe while Ian Farrimond ran out a convincing winner against Ian Carter.

Qualifiers for Semi-Finals

The final between Steve and Ian was nip and tuck all the way and after the 12 scheduled ends they were tied at 8 across.
Many thanks to everyone who entered and those who helped to keep things running smoothly on the day.
Our usual thanks to Bernard Oates for organising the event and for providing the above information.

Club win F.S. Jones Trophy

The F.S. Jones Trophy is open to all teams playing in a League run by Staffordshire Parks Bowling Association.
The Competition dates back to 1933 and this is the first time it has been won by our Club.
This was a great achievement for the team, captained by John Jenkins.
The Final was played on Tuesday 11th August 2015 at Little Stoke Cricket Club, details are below.

Ian Farrimond reaches Semi-Final of Jack & Jean Isherwood Trophy

Ian Farrimond did exceptionally well to reach the Semi-Final stage of the Jack & Jean Isherwood Veteran's Championship.
The Finals of this National Event were held at Prees Recreation Club, Shropshire on Wednesday 1st July.
Ian was one of 22 players entering the local qualifiers and he reached the last 8 through winning his game at London Road.
He then won his 2 games in the local final qualifier which was held at Florence Private.
In the National Finals at Prees there were 32 players from 14 County Associations, including 2 qualifiers from the Potteries.
Ian reached the Semi-Final with wins against Michael Maguire (Yorkshire), Colin Smith (Wales) and Gerald Merry (Cheshire).
In the Semi-Final he lost 21-14 to Mike Leach (North Lancs and Fylde).
Mike Leach went on to win the title with a 21-11 win against Noel Burrows (Cheshire).

Well Done Fazza!!

2015 Westlands Men's Doubles
Success for Phil Shaw and Steve Howe

The Annual Men's Doubles was held on Sunday 5th July, organised by our Competitions Secretary, Bernard Oates.
Several heavy showers interrupted an otherwise pleasant afternoon for the 16 members taking part. Players had to work hard to adjust to the ever-changing pace of the green. After 3 "round robin" sessions, Derek Adams had accumulated the best aggregate score with Phil Shaw lying second and Bill Oldham and Rob Newton tied in third place.
In one semi-final Derek and his partner John Shuker lost to Steve Howe and Phil Shaw. In the other semi Harry Hulme and Bill Oldham accounted for Rob Newton and John Durber.
The final was level pegging until the last few ends when Phil and Steve powered ahead to beat Harry and Bill 14 - 7.

It was Steve's second win in the competition, having previously won in 2012. Phil did extremely well to succeed as this is only his second season of competitive bowling. Many thanks to all participants for entering and coping with the ever changing conditions. Thanks also to supporters for their help with scoring and running the the kitchen.

Many thanks to Bernard Oates for organising this competition and for providing the above summary.

Janet Mairs Trophy 2015
Success for Maureen Clarke and Bernard Oates

On Sunday 17th May 27 members competed in the annual mixed doubles competition for the Janet Mairs Trophy. The event was organised by our Competitions Secretary, Bernard Oates and is open to members of Westlands Bowling Club and Westlands Ladies Bowling Club.
The field included last year's winners Mo Clarke and Eric Machin  who were keen to defend their title.
The weather remained dry but so cold that it tested the usual hardiness of our bowlers.
Everyone made the usual excellent contribution to the catering and, after completing three sessions of bowls, players and guests enjoyed an excellent buffet.

After four sessions the 4 highest scoring ladies and gents went through to the semi-finals. It didn't pass without comment that the person tracking the total scores had managed to book himself a place in the semis!!
In the semi-finals: -
Janice Adams & Harry Hulme beat Christine Miles & Vince Cartwright
Mo Clarke & Bernard Oates defeated Sylvia Benson and John Shuker
Mo and Bernard ran out winners of the competition with Janice and Harry as runners-up.
Congratulations to all four finalists, especially Mo who successfully retained the trophy she had won in 2014.

This was Mo's 3rd consecutive appearance in the final having been runner-up in 2013.
It was also Harry's 3rd successive appearance in the final but he has never quite succeeded and on each occasion has been runner-up.
Thanks to everyone who entered and especially those who came early to set up and help keep everything running smoothly throughout the day.
Many thanks to Bernard Oates for organising this competition and for providing the above summary.
