Martin Walker and Richard Burgess captured the Alan Finneron Doubles title at Congleton Cricket Club.
This is a long established prestigious competition attracting many top local bowlers.
In the qualifiers, held on Monday 13 October; Martin and Richard won their games 21-16 and 21-8.

Our lads pulled off 3 great wins on finals day, Sunday 26 October.
They opened with a 21-9 win in their quarter final.
This was followed by a 21-8 semi-final win against Nick Tideswell and Chris McDonald.
In the final they ran out 21-5 winners against Glyn Berrisford and Darren Beardmore.

This was a great achievement by Martin and Richard who bowled immaculately throughout finals day.
I understand they were very well rewarded for their efforts!

Hat Trick of Titles for Saturday Parks Division 1 Team
Peter Walthall wins League Average Prize

Captained by John Jenkins, our Saturday Parks Team won the Division 1 Title for the 3rd consecutive season. This is the 6th time they have topped the League since 2000.
During the season they lost only 2 matches and in the past 3 years they have won 43 of their 52 matches.
It was a particularly good season for Peter Walthall who topped the Saturday Parks Division 1 averages.
Well done John, Peter and the team.

On their way to the final, the Westlands side accounted for teams from Congleton Park, Congleton Cricket Club and Swettenham.
The final was held at Congleton Railway and Westlands had to concede 8 chalks. There was some excellent bowling from both teams and at the half-way mark Norton led by 18 points. However, 3 impressive wins saw the Westlands team win by 15 points.

Thanks to a 122 - 105 victory the title went to Westlands Ladies by a 7 point margin over their opponents.
Many congratulations to Chris Bougourd and her team on regaining their Division 2 status after 3 years in Division 3.

It was a great season for Sarah Bailey who topped the Division 3 averages.

Steve and Pete qualified for the final stages by winning 3 games at Clough Hall B.C.

It was the 2nd time Steve had won this competition, the previous occasion was in 1987.

Congratulations to Steve and Pete, you have done us proud.

Adam Jackson wins 2014 President's Cup

In recent years the President's Cup failed to attract sufficient numbers as a Sunday afternoon competition; it was therefore re-launched as a knockout competition.
Sixteen members took part and rounds were played during June, July and August.
A separate draw for opponents was made prior to each round.

The final, between Adam Jackson and Bernard Regan, took place on 15th September.
On his way to the final Adam had accounted for Phil Shaw, Derek Adams and Jim Miles whilst Bernard had knocked out Harry Hulme, Dave Jackson and Bernard Oates.

Adam dominated the final and ran out a winner 21-6. It was his 2nd win in this competition.
Congratulations to Adam on this success and to Bernard for reaching the final.

Organiser Bernard Oates thanks competitors for adhering to the deadlines which enabled the competition to progress smoothly.

Dave Kidd retains Westlands Cup

This singles handicap competition is open to all members of Westlands Bowling Club and Westlands Ladies Club.
The 2014 event was held on September 14th during a very enjoyable Indian Summer.

20 members took part and it proved a repeat triumph for last year's winner, Dave Kidd.
After three rounds of 11 ends, the players with the highest chalks difference entered the semi-finals in which Paul Curley beat Dave Brown and Dave Kidd beat Stan Wilkes.
The final was also played over 11 ends and in the early stages it seemed the game could go either way. However, towards the end Dave managed to pull ahead to record a 10-7 win.
After 20 year break Dave returned to bowling in 2013. His Westlands Cup record is now a very impressive Played 2 - Won 2.

Competition Secretary, Bernard Oates congratulates all four semi-finalists and especially Dave Kidd for retaining the Cup. He would also thank all participants and their supporters for providing an excellent buffet and for the help they gave during the afternoon, (including responding to problems as they arose!).

2014 Westlands Men's Doubles

The Annual Men's Doubles was held on Sunday 10th August. It was organised by our Competitions Secretary, Bernard Oates.
The morning of the competition saw the worst weather of the summer but just before the scheduled start, the rain stopped and 16 members played their games in overcast and windy conditions.
The preliminary stage was a round robin in which everyone played 3 games. Rob Newton was the clear winner of this session but there were 3-way ties for both 5th and 8th places. Once resolved, 8 players went forward to the semis.
Both semi-finals were decided by a single point. Eric Machin and Derek Adams edged out Rob Newton and Bernard Oates whilst in the other game Norman Thompson and Jim Miles pipped Adrian Bailey and Harry Hulme.

Gusting winds were a problem during the final in which Eric and Derek won the title by narrowly defeating Norman and Jim.
This was an excellent achievement by Derek who had only taken up bowling at the start of the 2014 season. It was Eric's 2nd success in the event having won in 2012 which, coincidentally, was also his first season in bowling.

Many thanks to Bernard Oates for organising this competition and for providing the above summary.

Janet Mairs Trophy 2014
Success for Maureen Clarke and Eric Machin

The Annual Mixed Doubles event was held on Sunday 18th May.
The competition is open to members of Westlands Bowling Club and Westlands Ladies Bowling Club.
A small but select group of 18 members took part in the event which was organised by our Competitions Secretary, Bernard Oates. With the sun shining and a cool breeze blowing, the conditions were absolutely ideal.
Sadly neither of last year's winners were available to defend their title.
Everyone contributed to the food and after two rounds of bowls, players and their guests enjoyed an excellent buffet.

After 4 rounds, the higher scoring players entered the final where, in a game of some quality, Mo Clarke and Eric Machin narrowly defeated Sylvia Oates and Harry Hulme. Congratulations to all four finalists.

It was the first time that either Mo or Eric had won the
Annual Mixed Doubles.

My thanks to those who came early to set things up and those who stayed on to help clear up.

Thanks also to our President, Mike Rushworth, for his interest in this competition for which he generously donated a new trophy.

With thanks to Bernard for kindly organising this competition and providing the above summary.

Winners - Mo and Eric

The Janet Mairs Pavilion

At the 2012 AGM, members were informed that Janet Mairs had kindly bequeathed a sum of money to the Club. This gift must be used to provide an improved pavilion and was contingent on the work commencing within 2 years of Janet's death (i.e. by 27th May 2013). In view of the time constraint and taking practical considerations into account it would be essential to start building work at the end of the 2012 bowling season and have the new pavilion in use by the start of the 2013 season.

By the end of March 2012 an outline design had been drawn up and in April we discussed the project with numerous builders. It was decided to use the services of Ian Oakes Carpentry & Bespoke Joinery, Tean, who specialise in oak buildings. They are a relatively small company who would be able to accommodate special requirements as they arose on the project.

Our Planning Application was submitted on 20th June 2012 and Planning Permission granted on 21st August.

The existing bowling pavilion, built in 1937, was demolished in the second week of November 2012 and foundations for the new pavilion laid the following month.

The main frame for the new pavilion was erected on 23rd January 2013 and building work continued for a further 10 weeks.

The completed building was handed over to Newcastle Borough Council on 9th April 2013.

The official opening of The Janet Mairs Pavilion was on Sunday 26th May 2013. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day and were very pleased that Janet's brothers, Peter and Tony, together with other members of her family were able to join us on this occasion.

Our new pavilion has now been in use for a season. It has certainly provided a major improvement to the facilities at Westlands.

On behalf of all members - Many thanks Janet

Westlands Waterloo Trip 2013
Barney's Bunch win that coveted Waterloo Trophy

Our 18th annual competition at the Waterloo Hotel was on Wednesday 2nd October.

For the 8th consecutive year the result was totally unexpected as the unfancied Barney's Bunch, captained by Bernard Regan, were shock winners of the Waterloo Trophy.
The legendary Tony's Touchers, led by their superb Captain, finished in 2nd spot and added yet another silver medal to their impressive collection which now numbers 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 3 Bronze (absolutely astonishing!).
With Bernard never far away from the scoreboard, Barney's Bunch led from start to finish and did quite well to lose only 5 of their 21 games. The Touchers were in hot pursuit but couldn't quite pull off what would have been a very popular success; they eventually finished a mere 64 points adrift.
After their shock win in 2012, Ian's Army finished a remote 3rd. Two very weak outfits made up the numbers and had their own private battle for 4th spot. Graham's Group just managed to edge out Bills' Buddies who were badly let down by their Captain and his friend. The team ended the day on - 29 points due to the contribution of Bill who personally managed - 29 points and his friend who finished the day on - 23 points (what a duo - my apologies to the other team members!).

Dave Kidd wins Westlands Cup

The "Westlands Cup" is a singles handicap event. This year's competition took place on Sunday 16th August. 18 members took part on a lovely warm and pleasant afternoon.
The initial stage was a round robin session in which everyone played 3 games, each of 10 ends.
The 4 highest scoring members then took part in a 2 round knock-out competition.
Dave Kidd, a new member of the Club and Jim Miles were finalists after overcoming Christine Miles and Sylvia Oates in their respective semis. In a closely fought final Dave eventually managed to take the title. Many congratulations to Dave on this success. The win was a particularly good achievement as Dave only returned to bowling in 2013 after a break of about 20 years.
With thanks to Bernard Oates for organising this competition.

Janet Mairs Trophy 2013
Success for Lynne Clowes & Bill Oldham

The Annual Mixed Doubles event was held on Sunday 23rd June.
Westlands Bowling Club and Westlands Ladies Bowling Club have been jointly organising a Mixed Doubles competition since 1982.
The 2013 event was a very special occasion and could be termed a new event. Members would be playing for The Janet Mairs Trophy. This trophy had been kindly donated by Mike Rushworth, Club President, in memory of Janet, a very loyal member of both Clubs.

Despite the rather inclement weather, there was a good turn out of 23 members who enjoyed a very interesting competition organised by Bernard Oates, our new Competition Secretary.
In the preliminary series of matches players had a different partner for each game. They were able to enjoy a few dry breaks in an otherwise wet afternoon. At the end of this stage, the 4 highest scoring ladies and the 4 highest scoring gents progressed to play in a 2 round knockout competition in increasingly windy conditions.
In the final Lynne Clowes and Bill Oldham beat Mo Clarke and Harry Hulme.
Congratulations to Lynne and Bill. It was the first time that either had won the Westlands Mixed Doubles.
Thanks also to Hilary Dale for  organising an excellent buffet which had kindly been provided by the ladies.

Winners - Bill and Lynne

A useful selection of Waterproofs!

Finalists - Lynne, Bill, Harry and Mo

Mens Doubles Competition

The competition was held on Sunday 12th May. The day was cold and rather wet and the conditions affected the number of entries.
26 Members had registered to take part but only 17 actually braved the inclement weather to play.
The competition was run as a "round robin" with everyone playing 4 games of 10 ends each.
The winners were Jim Miles and Bernard Oates and the runners up were Harry Hulme and Peter Rose.
It was the first win for either Jim or Bernard in this competition.
(we are most fortunate that no photos were taken of the winning duo!)
