Marie - Ladies County Player of the Year 2007

At their recent presentation evening Staffs Parks Ladies presented Marie Brain with the
"County Player of the Year 2007" award. Marie was a member of the Staffs team which won the 2007 Ladies County Championship at the Waterloo Hotel.

To round off a memorable season, Marie was most  honoured by being selected to play for "The Touchers" . (Unfortunately, on this occasion, she did not quite fulfil her Captain's expectations!!)

Another Waterloo Shock

The 2007 Club trip to the Waterloo Hotel was on Thursday 27th September. This was our 12th visit and the fine weather ordered duly arrived. Unfortunately, the result many had yearned for did not quite materialise. To the disappointment of their many admirers Tony's Touchers just failed to regain the fabulous Waterloo Trophy.

The Trophy was won by Steve's Squad who were making their debut in the competition. Without wishing to appear at all envious, they were little more than a bunch of novices who had entered just to make up the numbers. This was the second consecutive year that the rank outsiders had won the contest and the organisers must now look at alternative scoring systems to produce a more acceptable outcome.

One or two brave souls took a photo of the victors but it is most unlikely to be suitable for publication.

With the exception of the result, all else at the Waterloo was fine, a wonderful green and great food (such a pity about that result!!).

Janet wins Westlands Cup

Congratulations to Janet Mairs on winning the Westlands Cup. Janet becomes only the second lady to win this competition which has been running since 1959.

Congratulations also to Steve Brain, President's Cup winner and Brian Rutter, winner of the Vic's Vets.

20 members took part in the event.
Many of the games were close affairs which necessitated holding the final on the Sunday.

It was Tom's first win in the event whilst Ian was retaining the title he had won in 2006.

Many thanks to Steve Brain for organising the event and to numerous helpers and card markers.

Marie retains Ladies' Division 2 Average Award

For the second consecutive year Marie Brain topped the averages in Division 2 of the Ladies Thursday League.
In the 22 games played, Marie dropped just 14 chalks (1 less than her 2006 achievement).
Her record over the past 2 seasons is to have averaged 20.3 points per game for the 44 League matches played.

Janet Mairs made it a great 1 - 2 for Westlands Ladies by capturing the runner-up spot in the Division 2 Averages.

More Success for Matt Hill

Matt Hill's rich vein of form continues. On Friday 10th August he finished runner-up in the Jeff  Rosenau Trophy at Meir Kings Arms.

A few days later, on 15th August, he won the 15-19 Age Group Section of the Junior League Merits, held at Florence T & BC.

Other Westlands Juniors who did well in this competition were Ben Jackson who reached the semi-final of the 12-14 age group and Todd Ridge who reached the semis of the 15-19 age group.

Matt rounded off a great August by winning the Barry Lawton Trophy at London Road Bowling Club, in this event Dave Hyatt also did very well to reach the semi-final.

Matt is pictured with some of the latest additions to the Hill Trophy Cabinet.

British Parks Junior Merit Finals 2007

The Final of the British Parks Junior Merit Competition was held at Florence Private on Sunday 5th August.
4 representatives from North Staffs had qualified by reaching the semi-finals of the Staffs Junior Merit Competition.
Todd Ridge and Matt Hill, Westlands were joined in the line up by Jon Price, Florence and Jarrad Hamer, Fegg Hayes.

After winning his first 2 games Todd lost 21-18 to Simon Hallas, South Yorkshire.

Matt went on to reach the final where he met Jon Price in an all North Staffs Final. They had a tremendous battle and Matt led 18-13 and 20-18. Jon then played some great woods to nick the title with a 21-20 win.

Runner-up in a National Final is a great achievement by Matt who emulates Club colleague Adam Jackson, runner-up in the 2006 event. Having had 2 runners up spots perhaps 2008 will be 3rd time lucky for one of our Juniors!

Potteries Junior Merits

In the Potteries Junior Individual Merit Competition, held at Creda Bowling Club, Todd Ridge added the Potteries Junior Merit title to his Parks Junior Merit title. In the Final Todd beat Craig Podmore, Meir Kings Arms 21-17.
To win a Junior County title is every young bowlers ambition. Todd has  won both local Junior titles in one season and this is a tremendous achievement. He could well be the first Junior to capture  both titles in the same season.
Well done Todd (with players like Todd and Matt at the Club I'll never be short of work!!)

Full details of the Potteries event can be seen on the Potteries Website.

Held on Sunday 15th July 2007

Congratulations to Todd Ridge on winning the 2007 Parks Junior Merit Competition.

Westlands Mixed Doubles

Held on Sunday 24th June 2007

The weather was not as kind as in recent years and this delayed the start of the event.
The preliminary stage was a  "Round Robin" competition and, in view of the late start, games were played over 7 ends.

4 Pairs qualified for the Semi-Final stage of the competition.

The Final was a very tight affair with just 8 points being scored during the 7 ends.

                Final Result: -

Janet Mairs &

v

Jackie Emery &

Howard Finney Ben Jackson

Janet thus retained the Mixed Doubles title she had first won in 2006. It was Howard's first win in this event.

The competition was thoroughly enjoyed by all those taking part.
Our sincere thanks go to the ladies who once again provided superb refreshments throughout the afternoon.
Thanks also to Steve Brain, Competitions Secretary, for organising the competition.
